BCC Juniors review 2010
Sunday morning sessions are run for all our Junior cricketers (U9 and
below) during the school summer term - May to July. The sessions are
broken down into various skills, with a quick cricket game at the end to
focus on those skills learnt during the session.
ABCs (Agility, Balance, Co-ordination, Speed).
These are the core fundamentals that all junior athletes need to focus on
during their initial years in any sporting activity. We ran an obstacle
course session to look at running technique, balance and hand-eye
co-ordination.
Bowling.
At U10, a cricketer will be expected to bowl over a 19 yard wicket. We
have concentrated on maintaining a proper technique while trying to pitch
the ball at the correct length into the "area of uncertainty" for the
batsman. It is important that Y3 and Y4 cricketers practice bowling at
this range.
Batting.
Hitting a ball, whether in cricket, rounders or tennis, is a fundamental
of the ABCs listed above. For the younger players, we ask them to
concentrate on looking at the ball and trying to hit it, while remaining
balanced. For the older players, we progressed this into thinking a little
bit more about where the ball will be played, and also looked at defensive
shots and how to turn these into attacking play.
Fielding.
"Catches win matches" as the saying goes. Fielding can sometimes be seen
as the boring side of cricket. We have run sessions on ball pickup,
throwing, long barrier and wicket keeping, and have seen great improvement
during the sessions.
Game Play.
There have been some fantastic games during the year, with some great
batting, bowling and fielding. All our sessions focus on safety, equity
and enjoyment.
Presentation Day - July 18th.
We were very fortunate to have Ben Cox, wicket keeper for Worcestershire,
available to present the certificates to the players on Sunday morning.
Ben started playing, as a junior, on Sunday mornings, before progressing
through the Belbroughton youth teams, and on to even greater things with
WCCC. Those signed certificates will become a collectors item over the
coming years.
Coaches and Helpers.
The club is always looking for new coaches and helpers, and the success of
the Sunday morning sessions is down to the dedication of the coaches and
helpers who make themselves available. If anyone would like to help out
next year, please contact Peter Stuart for further details.
Finally, to all the Sunday morning players, I hope you have enjoyed the
sessions. It has been lots of fun coaching you over the last 12 weeks, and
I have been most impressed with your ability to listen and remain safe
when other games have been going on. All the coaches have commented on how
well you have played and we have seen significant improvement during the
season. Well done!
